Sören D. Petersen started his own brand d.co Copenhagen in 1997 as a fashion brand.
He designed only trousers in the first year and had an immediate success by creating the first flare trousers with wide legs. The trousers were of spectacularly woven qualities and perfect fit without stretch. D.co Copenhagen was standing for high fashion of high quality but for a medium price. In the following Petersen designed complete men’s and women’s collections, in all he created four collections of trousers, shirts, knits. In 2001 the incidents of September 11th induced a total change in fashion, jeans were upcoming which was the beginning of the crisis of d.co Copenhagen. So in 2003 Petersen saw the need for a total change and translated the unique perception of d.co Copenhagen fashion into footwear. D.co shoes were a sensation for the market. Around 25.000 pairs of shoes were sold only in Denmark the first season and the success of d.co Copenhagen is constantly growing. What is the secret of Sören D. Petersen’s outstanding success? He always starts with the proportions of a shoe, the typical look of a d.co shoe is more short, not narrow or long. Stones from the sea
Three stones from the sea served d.co Copenhagen as an inspiration for autumn/winter 2009/2010. The round, soft and mat look of sea stones and minerals inspired the designer Sören D. Petersen in colour scheme and choice of materials. The leather is particularly soft and mat and the colours range from light tan, stone and taupe to grey, brown and black. Petersen’s intention is to transform the beauty of nature into an urban shoe collection. With the autumn/winter 2009/2010 collection he wants to reflect the purity, freshness, calm and harmony of a landscape. This message perfectly correlates with the general philosophy of d.co Copenhagen, with its respect for the old Danish furniture designers who stand for functionality, simplicity, authenticity which are also the defining characteristics of d.co Copenhagen. Petersen’s strength is his eye for proportions and his capability to stop the designing process to keep the curve line soft and simple. It is the skill to walk on the thin line between keeping it simple and making it different enough which makes d.co Copenhagen so successful.
